Dancing with the Ancestors
Discover a deeper connection
An afternoon workshop with John Lockley in Dublin, Ireland.
In traditional African cultures, our relationship with the ancestors is a living one. They are remembered as those who came before us, whose stories, strength and wisdom continue to shape our lives. Like trees, we too need roots. The deeper we root ourselves, the higher we can fly.
During this special one-day gathering, John Lockley will share teachings and ceremonial practices from his Xhosa and Swazi sangoma traditions. Through the ancient medicine of the drum, chant, dance and prayer, we will explore ways of deepening our connection to ourselves, our ancestors and the living world around us.
John will lead the ceremony in a traditional sangoma way, using his drum, dancing rattles, chants and flute to create a sacred space for reflection, movement and ancestral connection.
During the day, John will guide us in:
- The traditional Xentsa – Trance Dance
Experience an ancient form of ‘shaking medicine’; rhythmical movement involving gentle shaking of the body. It is easy to learn and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. In South Africa it is called ‘Xentsa’ and is a joyful way of awakening the senses, releasing tension and reconnecting with the natural rhythms of the body. As a special bonus – It is an excellent way to stimulate and heal the lymphatic system! It is traditionally used to support dreaming and deepen our connection with spirit.
- The Three Levels of Dreaming
Dreams have always been considered an important bridge between the visible and invisible worlds. John will share his teachings on the three levels of dreaming, helping you to develop a deeper dream practice. Explore the meaning of your dreams and become more aware of the messages and wisdom that may emerge from them.
- Connecting with Ancestors and Spirit Guides
Across many indigenous traditions, ancestors are understood as a powerful spiritual force within our lives. John will share ancient sangoma teachings on how to deepen your relationship with your ancestors and spirit guides. Spirit guides can include nature spirits like water spirits. Sangoma culture has a long history of mermaids and water elementals. No sangoma initiation is complete without prayers near the waters. John will share teachings about these ancient ways.
We are more than our individual lives. We are part of a much greater story.
Through ceremony and reflection, you will be invited to explore the different ancestral channels within you — those of blood, spirit and nature — and discover how a deeper sense of connection can help us find greater strength, guidance and belonging.
This is not simply a workshop about learning ideas. It is an opportunity to experience ceremony — to move, dream, listen and remember that we are part of something much greater than ourselves.
