We wanted to share this powerful article by Amanda Collins from our Winter 2017/18 issue, in which she urges us to stop looking to unknown future events for our happiness, and to live for today instead. She says, “You can choose and claim happiness by living, breathing, and doing everything, every day, from a place of self-love.” The time for us to step into our power and choose our birthright of happiness is NOW.
You are love, pure and simple. Happiness is your birthright. All you have to do is choose it and claim it. “How?” you may wonder. You can choose and claim happiness by living, breathing, and doing everything, every day, from a place of self-love. If that sounds impossible to you, it’s time to begin listening to your self-talk, to look for signs and symptoms of denying the love and self-love that resides at the core of your being.
Do you say things to yourself such as “I’ll be happy when…” and then add an event in the future? When I lose more weight, when I find a boyfriend, when I make more money, when I quit my job: all of these thoughts deny you the happiness you might be feeling in the here and now. You are postponing your happiness when you could be inhaling joy and self-love with every breath instead.
Do you say other things to yourself such as “I wish I were as successful in my love life as I am at my job,” or “If only I were as good a parent as I am a friend”? Such thoughts again deny your ability to bring happiness into every area of your life. Instead of wishing, reframe your thoughts with the belief that you can bring the same ease, flow, and energy to your “weak” areas as to your “strong” ones.
Do you say things to yourself such as “Oh, it’s just my usual bad luck!” or “This kind of thing always happens to me”? Such statements deny your freedom of choice. They make you subject to some past negative idea of fate or destiny controlling your life. Be aware of the ways you criticise yourself or expect the worst. These are strong signs that you do not love yourself unconditionally. At some level you may feel (or have been told) that you do not deserve happiness. If so, you can begin the process of rooting out such self-denying attitudes.
Once you have developed the capacity to hear the negative messages in your self-talk, begin affirming the positive in yourself. Meditate to quiet the chatter so you can hear the deeper voice that knows you are love and that feeling self-love is the first step on the path to feeling deserving of happiness. Then you may choose to be happy. NOW.
Affirmations are a key method of reprogramming your mind— which has the quality of neuroplasticity—by replacing negative thoughts, doubts, fears and expectations with positive ones. State positively, as if it has already happened, your intentions and gratitude for whatever will bring greater positive energy and happiness into your life. Repeat each with full conviction five times in the morning and five in the evening. Here are a few examples to help you create your own:
- I give thanks for my lovely children who bring joy and pleasure to my life.
- I deserve to be respected, valued, loved and honoured.
- I am a magnet of success, grateful that limitless opportunities open for me now.
- I give thanks for my busy career and the clarity to use my time wisely.
- Radiant, vibrant good health is mine in every cell and atom of my being.
- I love myself unconditionally and shine that love into the world.
Examine your morning ritual. When you wake up in the morning, do you immediately reach for your phone or computer? Do you look for distraction or affirmation in the outside world? Change that habit. Tap in first. Tap into your heart and higher self. Ask yourself what you are grateful for. Breathe in and fill yourself with gratitude and the possibilities of abundance that each new day brings. From that place of strength, listen to the gremlins of negative self talk and banish them. Go for a run in nature. Stand in the sun or let the rain bathe you so you can connect yourself with the earth.
Find practices that are really nurturing and nourishing to you: whether it’s reading inspiring books, joining webinars and classes, or perhaps getting the therapy you may need for greater support and healing. If you notice you are depressed or low on energy a lot of the time, that’s a good sign you may need some expert help to heal and grow. I believe that getting expert help is a way of loving ourselves. Know that you deserve that time and that support. Give yourself permission to do what is self-loving by practicing self care each and every day.
Listening to yourself, affirming your strengths, examining your habits, practicing self care: these observances will help you cultivate self-love. Stop looking for happiness outside of yourself. Happiness is an inside job. Self-love is an inside job. Choose happiness, claim it as your birthright. Now!

I have always been a somewhat chaotic, messy person. If I’m really honest, I enjoy a little bit of that. During the times in my life when I’ve been super organised and tidy and routine, I’m pretty sure I’ve self-sabotaged very quickly just for a little injection of excitement! Sadly, just a dash of chaos has always been hard for me to manage. It usually feels more like the lid fell off the hot sauce, and instead of a little bit of spice, the entire meal is ruined. I’ve tried to change. I’ve tried Feng Shui, I’ve tried really detailed diaries, I’ve tried making lists, focusing on things that make me happy, focusing on urgent tasks, focusing on relaxation, and I’ve tried to balance all of the above. Nothing worked in the long term, and often left me feeling even worse. A few months ago, while tidying my mess of a room, I listened to Marie Kondo’s book, ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up’. I listened to it with zero expectations that I would enjoy it or stick to it. Months later, my socks are still neatly folded and put away within a day or two of doing laundry, and I have more time and focus for things I love. What’s so different about this method? I’m honestly not sure, but I can tell you some of the things that resonated with me.
Written with Love
Some people will no doubt find the book a little cheesy or over the top in parts. I felt it was sweet and authentic and filled to the brim with love. It really does contain a little bit of magic if you’re open to it.
Letting Go of More
When you begin to only keep items that ‘spark joy’, you really start to take that approach with everything around you. I’m already an avid de-clutterer, but it gave me the boost I needed to bin things like notebooks from various projects that I’ve thought I would come back to, but never did. I only keep things that I truly want to focus on now. I feel like I have literally binned guilt!
Kondo has special techniques for folding everything, from socks to sweaters. She promises you’ll end up finding it ‘fun’. I laughed at that. I don’t find it ‘fun’, but I was surprised to find pleasure in it. Thanking your clothes feels like a little exercise in gratitude. I find it to be meditative, even though it is a task I need to do anyway! It’s the perfect meditation practice for the ever-distracted fidgeter.
Because I find Kondo’s approach so thorough and loving, I’ve also found it easy to sustain. It brings me joy to get dressed in the mornings because it’s so easy to see what I have, and what I love. It’s easy to find documents I need because I’ve gotten rid of so many that really weren’t necessary. And sometimes, what sparks joy is making a mess. But thanks to the KonMari method, I’ve found I can add that little injection of chaos, without it taking over anymore.

Subtle energies constantly move in and around our bodies, whether or not we are aware of them. Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) are energy waves with frequencies below 300 hertz or cycles per second. We encounter such EMF radiation daily from everyday things such as power lines, radar and microwave towers, television and computer screens, motors, fl uorescent lights, microwave ovens, mobile phones, electric blankets, household wiring and other common sources. Constant exposure and excessive EMFs can lead to a weakening of your immune and nervous systems.
The first step towards minimising exposure to EMFs is to choose not purchase or rent a home close to power lines or substations. In years to come it will become harder to sell homes in these locations. Within a safely situated home, there are many simple things that you can do to create a healthier space. Let’s start with your bedroom. What a gift to give yourself to allow your body to completely rest and rejuvenate by not having any electrical equipment in your bedroom, except perhaps for nightlights. Remove all other items such as electric blankets, televisions, and computers, and do not charge your portable devices in the bedroom. I like to say that bedrooms should have only what you need for rest and romance. f you need an alarm clock in your bedroom, use a battery operated one rather than a plug- in. The electrical alarm clock close to your bed generates an EMF field of about 5-10 mG (milligauss), which is much higher than the safe level (max 1 mG). Make sure not to sleep with your headboard up against the home’s main electrical box. It’s even more important to follow these rules in children’s bedrooms as their bodies are growing and their brains are developing. If possible, turn off your WiFi and unplug other electronics in the hours you are not using them. This also saves on your electrical bill. Charge all mobile phones and computers as far away as possible from places that you sleep. In the kitchen, remove your microwave oven; it changes the molecular structure of your food and kills the riboflavins. You can heat food just as simply on top of the stove.
When working on your laptop, do not place it on your lap. Use a desk or table, for the further away you are from EMFs the better. If possible, spend less time chatting on your mobile phone. Speaking on a landline is much better for your health. If you do use your mobile phone, turn on the speaker function, so as not to hold the mobile phone right against your head. You can also use an airtube headset (Google this if you don’t know what it is) when speaking on your mobile phone as this again creates distance between the source of the EMF and your skull. If possible, do not let your children use mobile phones, or limit their time with them to a minimum. Technology plays an integral part in our lives and certainly we are so grateful for all the conveniences that make it possible to communicate with loved ones from all over the world and to run our businesses virtually. Technology brings us many advantages, but if we can create balance in our homes by minimising our exposure to the harmful effects of EMFs, then we and our loved ones can live in greater harmony.

Feng Shui is all about having the most supportive, inspiring and healthiest home. One of the first steps to achieving these Feng Shui goals is to give your home a really good cleaning. But because Feng Shui also means living in harmony with the earth, your cleaning should use natural organic products that honour and nurture that
Using natural home cleaning products supports the sense of smell. Many cleaning products include natural essential oils, and thus will make your home smell nice by offering an ‘aromatherapy’ effect. Lavender is a natural disinfectant. Imagine getting your home clean while enjoying that beautiful relaxing aroma. You can even add a few drops to your clothes before they go into the dryer or a few drops in the vacuum cleaner.
Lemon is another magical essential oil. You can use a few drops on stains on your clothes, or add a few drops to a gallon of water when mopping your tile floors. Tea tree essential oil offers antibacterial, antiseptic and antifungal properties. It works especially well to get rid of mildew and mould around the house.
By contrast, bleach and other chemicals in non-natural cleaning products can create smells and even toxic odours that are unbearable. Simple ingredients needed for making your own cleaning products include:
– Baking soda
– Citrus seed extract: Usually made from grapefruit seed, this natural preservative is a powerful antimicrobial agent. It is often sold as grapefruit seed extract
– Essential oils: lavender, sweet orange, bergamot, rosemary, eucalyptus or tea tree; thyme; lemon or lemongrass; and peppermint or citronella Cider Vinegar
And here are some great recipes for making your own natural cleaning products:
– All purpose cleaner: nine parts water to one part white vinegar
– For the Bathroom: 10 drops of tea tree oil and three cups of white vinegar. Add to your toilet bowl and let sit for 15 minutes.
– Fill a spray bottle with half water and half vinegar for a shower or bathtub cleaner. Leave for 30 minutes before
– Glass Cleaner: Mix two cups water, 1/2 cup white or cider vinegar and one to two drops of lemon essential oil.
– Tile Grout Cleaner: Mix one part water and three parts baking soda mixed into a paste. Apply to grout and let sit; and then scrub.
– Cookware : Use sea salt with a little lemon juice or essential oil and scrub. Also, try baking soda and water made into a paste.
If you decide to purchase natural cleaning products instead of making them at home, there are just a couple of qualities to look out for:
– Nontoxic / Fragrance free
– Biobased / Reduced and recyclable packaging
– No VOCs / Pesticide Free
Feng Shui principles are becoming so widespread, you can get some great natural brands at the local health food store. Now even grocery stores carry them.
