Healthy living is a hot topic these days, and health stores are leading the charge. Evergreen Healthfood Stores were pioneers in this regard, as their first store opened on Mainguard Street in Galway City back in 1992. I recently spoke to co-founder Aideen Hurley to learn more about how the business has developed over the years.
‘Evergreen first came about when my husband Kieran recognised a gap in the market,’ she explains. ‘We were both passionate about healthy food, and we knew that this interest was growing in Ireland, little by little. So we opened up in Galway, and never looked back. We now have eight stores across the West – the most recent one was opened in Knocknacarra.’
As a family-run business, Evergreen has garnered a loyal clientele who appreciate the dedication and care evident in each of its stores. Staff are renowned for their high level of expertise and professionalism: qualities that are carefully nurtured by the company’s training programme. Evergreen currently puts forward more candidates for Certificates and Diplomas in Health Store Retailing than any other health store in Ireland or the UK.
‘It’s important to us that we send out staff who have been trained to a very high standard, and know exactly what they’re talking about,’ Aideen explains.’That level of expertise is one of the main things we strive to offer to customers.’
Evergreen’s online shop has gone from strength to strength since being launched back in 2008. They regularly update their blog to keep customers posted on the most up-to-date developments in the natural health field.
