With the numerous ways to meet someone special – from Tinder, to Plenty of Fish, to speed dating – how come it seems to be so hard to meet a suitable partner? Relationship expert, clinical psychologist and international speaker Dr. Tony Humphreys claims most of us have been drugged into believing the three most “common creative delusions” about relationships. These are: “We all come from happy families,” “Marriage will bring me happiness,” and “Having children will make me happy.”
“The consequences of these delusions are great expectations – and when not met, great disappointment and resentment occurs,” said Dr. Humphreys. “A relationship is where I bring my completeness to another and I experience a completeness of the other.” We can become deluded with the belief that somebody out there is going to complete us and make us feel happy. In our quest to find the perfect relationship, we can forget to have that most important relationship: the relationship with ourselves. “Our most important responsibility is to get to know and love ourselves. You can travel the whole world and not find anyone more deserving of love than yourself. As you examine your own life and come into a fuller relationship with yourself, you automatically see your partner
differently because your see yourself differently,” said Dr. Humphreys.
One of the key ingredients of any relationship is the ability of both partners to communicate in an authentic way. Often, what blocks this is our fear of what the other person may think. “Communication of a real, authentic nature shows you’ve come into knowing yourself. Communication of a conflictual nature mirrors back the work I have to do on myself. The conflict in the relationship is now the opportunity for each person to reflect on their own inner worlds and see what they have brought to the relationship, so that they can come into their independence and bring their fullness to each other,” said Dr. Humphreys.
You can join Dr. Tony Humphreys for a special seminar style workshop entitled: “The Lure of the Relationship” on Sunday October 22nd, from 2 until 5pm at the Talbot Hotel, Stillorgan, Dublin. It includes a presentation and a live interview with Dr. Tony Humphreys, as well as a Q & A session. The event is being organised by The Health Zone, a platform to educate and empower people about health and wellbeing.
Tickets cost only €40 and are very limited for this event. Book your place here!

Attention, all fans of devotional chanting – or all those who want to try their hand at this amazing
art, while raising money for two great charities and having a lot of fun along the way. The Bhakti
Festival Dublin will be taking place on Saturday October 21st 2017, from 12 to 8 p.m., in the
Irishtown Gospel Hall, Ringsend, Dublin 4. It promises to be a joyful celebration of devotional
singing and sacred music that will leave attendees with a spring in their step and a renewed
appreciation of their own creative potential. The festival organisers include renowned devotional
singing teachers Yasia, Felicity Ananada and Jack Harrison, as well as the Chanting and Chai collaborative group, who will all be present on the day.
We caught up with Yasia to find out more.
Is this your first time holding the Bhakti Festival?
Yes, this is the first time we’re doing the festival. It is an experimental thing for us this year,
among a few of us who already know each other well – to see how it goes – and we are hoping
to expand on it in future. Chanting is non-denominational, and it’s such a brilliant way for people
to experience upliftment and connect to their hearts without having to be religious. There are
lots of different groups doing this work in Dublin – who come from lots of different cultures as
well – and we’re planning to include a much larger variety of these groups in future years. The
whole day is a full fundraiser for the two charities who have chosen to support.
Can you tell us a bit about Kolkata Sanved and Epilepsy Ireland, the charities you will be
supporting?
Over 40,000 people in Ireland have epilepsy, and this figure does not include children under the
age of five. Epilepsy Ireland provides courses, programmes and educational support for these
people and their families. Kolkata Sanved supports the survivors of sex trafficking in India
through dance and music therapy. There is stunning footage about them on YouTube, and their
work is truly incredible: how they help survivors to reintegrate into their families and
communities, and heal from their trauma.
What can festival attendees expect?
Well, the day is based on a traditional form of continuous chanting in India called sapta, which is when they have chants that last for days and days. Obviously we’re not going to be singing for days
and days – we’re going from twelve to eight in the evening! The way this will work is, each of us
will lead an hour and a half or so of chanting, then there will be a bit of meditation in between,
and then once we have finished our slot, we’ll move out of the way and the next group can
come in. People can come and go throughout the day. There will be a little stall there where
snacks and tea will be available. There’s also a brasserie across the road where people can go
if they get hungry after all the singing and want a meal! We will end the day with a meditation.
The Bhakti Festival Dublin will take place on Saturday October 21st 2017, from 12 to 8 p.m., in

As the first sound emerged from Deva on the night of her concert in Dublin, I felt my body respond
with shivers of delight. It was as if I were shaking off some of life’s dust which had gathered around me. Each note vibrated with a palpable out-pouring of emotion, devotion and love. My body, my face, broke open into a smile that lasted even after I’d laid my head on my pillow, at the end of the
night.
Magical, mythical and memorable, the stage perched Deva, Miten, Manose and musical crew under
the arch of a beautiful, Arabic doorway. As the night went on we entered further and deeper…into
the magic and immersed ourselves in the ancient memories stirred by the music and chants. We were no longer ‘audience’ and they ‘performers’ – we were fellow travellers, fellow seekers, fellow divine beings. We chanted together, meditated through mantra together, sang harmonies, greeted each other and gazed into the eyes of as many seated around us as possible. Towards the end of the night, as many as could gathered round the stage, some crying, others laughing, couples embracing; everyone swaying, absorbed and touched, each in our own way, by this beautiful invitation we had been given – to be ourselves, to be present, to be as One.
At Mitens’ song All is Welcome here, my friend beside me broke into tears. To arrive as we were, some from work, from home, from fray, from quarrel….and to find ourselves graced with joy, laughter, togetherness and with an explicit welcome for all of who we are and what we carry, was powerful. In that moment of acceptance was relief, joy and freedom.
This is more than just a concert – if you’d like it to be. You may come to tap your foot, hum, sing and
have an enjoyable night, but chances are it will be much more, than that.
Check their upcoming concert dates here and experience the beauty live!

What are you hoping to explore during your workshop in Ireland?
The theme of my talk is ‘Ask Your Guides’, which I think is very relevant to our world today. Our biggest problem right now is that people feel isolated and unsupported, and this brings about a lot of fear. So if we have a direct experience of support and guidance, so much creativity, healing and love can come from that. We need to know that we are supported and loved, and we need to know how to access that. So I am very excited to come over and teach people how to feel that sense of support and guidance in their lives.
What is your number one piece of advice for those who are hoping to become more attuned to their intuition?
My number one piece of advice is to get out of your head and be open to the reality that your heart is far more intelligent and far more capable of guiding you. There is a place for our logic and our intellect, and we do need them. However, that place is not to fight with or destroy our spirit. We must use our hearts as our guiding compass in life.
You have written a wide variety of books throughout your career. Which of them stands out to you as being particularly significant?
One of my earliest books was called Ask Your Guides, and I think of it as the ‘manual’ for how to connect with spirit guides. Another book that stands out for me is Tune In: Follow Your Intuition to Fulfilment and Flow, which is extremely relevant today, as so many people are experiencing incongruence between what their heart truly wants, and what they actually experience in their daily lives. Tune In helps you to move away from what isn’t working and reconnect to your spirit, so things can begin to flow and work for you.
Over the course of your years as a spiritual teacher, what do you feel has changed or deepened in your practice, and what has stayed the same?
What has stayed the same is my conviction that our hearts are brilliant, our intuition is indispensable, and we have to trust and follow our hearts and intuition if we are going to lead lives of deep satisfaction and integrity. What has changed is my increased capacity for deep compassion, patience and love. My experiences have helped me to grow into a more loving human being. That is what I have always aspired to be, and I think, to some degree, I can see that happening in my life. I am so grateful for that.
‘Ask Your Guides’ will take place at the CityNorth Hotel, 15 minutes north of Dublin Airport, on Saturday 11th November 2017.
