Journeying to Wholeness: We Interview Martin Duffy
We love the work of Martin Duffy, a shamanic teacher and practitioner based in Dunderry Park, Navan, Co. Meath. We were delighted to speak with him for our Autumn 2019 issue, on Transpersonal Psychology, plant medicine, Wetiko and more. This is a longer version of his conversation with Paul than the one that was published in the magazine. Enjoy!
We are thrilled to welcome the international shaman, author and spiritual teacher John Lockley back to Positive Nights to launch his new book, “Leopard Warrior”, on Thursday the 10th of May from 7.00 to 9.00 p.m. Our venue is the stunning Bewley’s Café Theatre on Grafton Street, Dublin 2. You can book your tickets on Eventbrite. Read on to find out more about what this amazing evening will hold.
AN AFRO-CELT HEALER RETURNS HOME
John’s mother, Anastasia Kelly, had a vision of Africa whilst walking the Dun Laoghaire peer in the 1950’s. Who would have thought that her vision involved the mystical healing tradition of Nelson Mandela’s tribe, the Xhosa nation; and that her son would become the first Irishman to be invited to train in one of the oldest shamanic traditions in the world, the sangoma people.
In my discussions with him he was so passionate about coming home to the beginning of his journey, to the place of his Mother’s vision: Dublin, Ireland. Join us while we listen to John’s remarkable story and hear him talk about ancestors, nature spirits, immortality and the importance of listening to our Dreams. In my chat with him earlier, he said “In my experience, Paul, many people in Ireland have visions and prophetic dreams. What I hope to do is inspire people to trust in their bones, their ancestors and their Dreams. Modern Ireland is wonderful, but I still remember the Ireland of the 1970’s when my Grandmother looked after all of us in Monkstown. We listened to her dreams with rapt wonder while she made us all tea. Smartphones are wonderful, Paul, but we need to remember to listen to our elders, their stories, dreams, and the folklore of our emerald isle. Because there is more to the stories of the little people than we can possibly comprehend…”
To find out more, join me and John for a chat, book read, and workshop involving John teaching us a traditional South African trance dance. Get your dancing shoes on and your poetry books lined up….
People will have an opportunity to get a signed copy of his book.
John will be available for private sessions in the days following this event. He will also be running a one day workshop in Dublin in June followed by a 3 day retreat in Kerry.

A Review for ‘Leopard Warrior’:
“Leopard Warrior is truly a remarkable account of the initiation of a white male in South Africa into becoming a sangoma. This is quite a sign to be entrusted with these deep ancestral mysteries. John Lockley shares a wealth of stories that will bring tears to your eyes as well as inspire you to want to learn more. The exercises he provides are simple yet transformative. This book is brilliant!”

Universal Truths & A Healing Culture – Irish-African Shaman John Lockley, by Elva Carri
An African-Irish Shaman
John Lockely is a traditional African shaman, known as a Sangoma (medicine person). He comes from the same tribe as Nelson Mandela, but his Mum is Irish and he refers to Ireland as his second home. He spoke to us from hot, noisy New York City, to tell us about his work, his journey and the joy of working as a catalyst to helping people discover and realise their dreams.
For three to four months of the year, John volunteers in his community at home in South Africa. He describes his work there as being like a nurse to the elders, ensuring they are well so that they can continue to help others throughout the year. The rest of the time he spends travelling Europe and the US, teaching people to live with the instinctual intelligence of a leopard in workshops, healing in one on one sessions and giving public talks or blessing ceremonies.
Through dreams, John was called to become a Sangoma at 17, but it was a long path before his training as a Sangoma began. He first trained in the medical corp of the South African army and worked in one of the best hospitals in South Africa. There, he discovered that black soldiers’ bodies healed about three times faster than the average soldier and he began to learn more about the African culture of healing. The secret? John says they understand and connect with the whole circle of life, from birth to death, their ancestors, their bones and their hearts.
They do not fear death in the way we do. Along with John’s traditional medical beginning to his journey, he also has two degrees in psychology and has studied yoga and Buddhism, all of which compliment and enhance his work in beautiful and practical ways.

Cork’s Shaman
By Michael Rob Costine
Three years ago and quite by chance, I attended a meditation class in Cork city. Like most people, I didn’t really know what to expect. The word Shaman was not new to me but being in class with one was. I liked the welcoming and respectful nature of Rajinder Singh and my experience led me to attend more classes, a one to one session and a workshop. I could see the difference it was making in how I felt and perceived the world around me and it began to enhance my life. It opened my eyes to the role of the Shaman and what it means to be one.
Rajinder is always open to sharing his own journey and his twenty years of experience to bring a practical and tangible understanding of Shamanic practices, ceremonies and rituals in everyday life to a modern world. Feeling safe in his presence is easy, he’s always in tune and ready to help. Last year, I travelled to Peru with his group and it was refreshing to see how the Q’ero Elders from the Andes and a Master Shaman in the Amazon held him and his work here in high regard.
His vision of training others to do the same inspires me. The kindness, compassion and guidance he shares with all that come to see him leads me to believe that he is right when he says, “Soon, every community will have a Shaman/Elder, like the old days.”
