We are primarily water-based beings. Approximately 70% of the average human adult’s body is composed of water, representing 99% of the body’s molecules. Thus, it is important that we stay well-hydrated at all times, especially when we’re on the go or experiencing warm weather. Having access to a high-quality water supply is vital to living a healthier life: this simple principle is what drives Emmanuel Poirier, the owner of water filtration and purifier company Healthy Water Matters.
Emmanuel first became interested in water quality back in 2012, whilst living in Ballincollig, Co. Cork. “One day, the water supply in the area was running orange for 45 minutes,” he recalls. “The local council was cleaning the pipes on my street, and I noticed how dirty the tap water pipe network was.”
“Sadly, this is a common problem in Ireland. Many people in the country experience issues with cryptosporidium, for example, and the water network is very inefficient. It’s estimated by Irish Water that about 43% of the Irish water supply is lost because of the poor piping system. This very old, leaking pipe system directly impacts on the water quality too – there are all kinds of chemicals in Irish water that can be harmful.”
Following this incident, Emmanuel bought a water filter for his home, but it proved to be slow and complicated to operate. He wanted to avoid buying bottled water, due to the plastic pollution problem. He was determined to find an easier way to help people improve their water quality.
