Household Help
Care for the planet
by Aisling Cronin
During this age of increasing eco-awareness, many people are wondering what differences they can make in their everyday lives that will help our planet to heal. One way to help is by checking out If You Care. The environmental advocates behind this company have been around for over fifteen years, offering a variety of eco-conscious household goods: including cloths, dishwasher tablets, coffee and tea filters, baking cups and more.
They are passionate about promoting the use of unbleached paper and other alternatives to many of the chemical-laden household goods that line our shelves, explaining: ‘Paper, in its natural state, is beige or light brown. For years people have subjected it to a bleaching process to create the white sheets we all know and love. Unfortunately, the paper bleaching process deposits chlorine in the lakes and streams where mills are most commonly located, and once there it bonds with organic matter in the form of dioxins: highly toxic chemicals that are thought to contribute to a host of health problems.’
They encourage seeking out alternatives to aluminium foil, because the primary component of this foil is bauxite, typically mined in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Therefore, very significant extraction, transportation and fuel costs are involved in moving this mineral around the globe. If You Care’s recycled aluminium foil uses less than 5% aluminium then regular foil.
Their website also features a variety of recipes, tips and other resources to help encourage you on your journey to embracing a more eco-friendly life.
