In our Autumn 2021 issue, we were given the opportunity to learn more about the unique Neurofeedback method they use to boost clients’ health – both of mind and body.
A health approach that soothes the brain
by Aisling Cronin
Mindbodied is a specialised health clinic located in Glanmire, Co. Cork, that combines ancient wisdom with the latest in wellness technology. I recently spoke with founders Michael Mulcahy and Alison Kingston, to learn more about their unique approach and methods.
The clinic’s work encompasses nutrition, kinesiology, and healthy living education. They also use a technology system called Neurofeedback, which scans brain activity to detect and alleviate any imbalances. Their Neurofeedback systems are available for rent, so people can use them at home or in their office.
The Neurofeedback device looks like an iPad and works through two simple buttons. Before renting out one of the systems, Michael and Alison offer training sessions – either in person at the clinic, or over Zoom – guiding people on how to use the technology.
‘You come in, sit down on a reclining chair, and five sensors are attached to your head,’ Michael explained. ‘Those sensors are connected to a computer system that contains the technology itself. During a Neurofeedback session, the person listens to calm, relaxing music for 33 minutes, while the sensors monitor their brain activity for signs of turbulence. Once they sense turbulence, they feed health-promoting information back to the brain, through the music the person is listening to. So a Neurofeedback session soothes the brain and gives it the ability to better regulate itself.’
Alison added that this improved regulation can have positive knock-on effects in other areas of a person’s life. ‘When people are feeling calmer and less stressed, it becomes easier for them to make better choices with regard to nutrition, exercise or other lifestyle changes.’
Alison and Michael’s greatest passion is educating people on how best to take care of their health. They are excited to be able to combine ancient wisdom with cutting-edge modern methods.
