Freedom from Trauma
The Somatic ExperiencingTM Approach.
by Persephone Kianka
The Somatic ExperiencingTM – or SETM -method is a body-oriented approach to healing trauma and other stress disorders
developed by Dr Peter A. Levine. It works to help people release traumatic shock, which is crucial to transforming PTSD
and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma.
Trauma derives from a perceived life threat or cumulative life-threatening experiences, which can prevent a person from functioning with resilience and ease. These experiences include “accidents, invasive medical procedures, sexual or physical assault, emotional abuse, neglect, war, natural disasters, loss, birth trauma, or the corrosive stressors of ongoing fear and conflict.”
The Somatic ExperiencingTM approach addresses the root cause of trauma symptoms by facilitating “the completion of self-protective motor responses and the release of thwarted survival energy bound in the body” using clinical tools or interventions. It also looks at the effect of these symptoms on a person’s everyday life and relationships.
This method provides practical skills suitable to many professions, including mental health, medicine, physical and occupational therapies, bodywork, addiction treatment, first response and education.
Tairseach, the Association of Somatic ExperiencingTM Practitioners in Ireland, was established in October 2017 to support the continuing professional development of SE practitioners in Ireland, including those completing their SETM training.
Tairseach provides a community for all practitioners who use Somatic ExperiencingTM in their work and informs the public about this approach. It also enables anyone interested to contact SETM practitioners for information or therapeutic support.
